Annoyed hamster
Sitting back and “bearing”
A hamster that is sitting back on its hind legs looking
like a miniature bear (hence the name of this posi-
tion) may look like he is smiling and ready for a game.
In fact, he is saying the direct opposite! This position
is a hamster’s way of saying “leave me alone or I will
attack.”
Ears pinned back
If your hamster’s ears are pinned back against his
head, he is saying he wishes to be left alone. This is
the usual position of the ears when the hamster is
asleep . . . it is his “Do not disturb” sign! If you wake
your hamster, wait until those ears are upright and
your pet is fully awake and ready to interact with you.
Frightened hamster
Freezing
When a hamster suddenly stops what he is doing and
freezes on the spot it means he has heard, seen, or
smelled something unusual and scary. He is fright-
ened. This is usually followed by running back to a
safe shelter.
