Colors and marking
Coat colors are divided into three types: agouti, self
colored, and patterned.
Agouti
There are two colors in this type: golden and cin-
namon.
Golden
This ranges from a light golden-yellow color (like
syrup) to deep mahogany red. The belly is light
colored, and there may be darker patches on the
chest and back. The golden color is that of the origi-
nal wild hamsters.
Cinnamon
This is one of the oldest varieties of hamster, dating
back to the 1950s and commonly found in pet stores.
As the name suggests, the coat is a bright orange-
brown overlaid with lighter colored hairs. The eyes
are red but darken with age.
