Ah, the pleasure of spring cycling.
You feel the breeze on your face as
you pedal through your
neighborhood—then swerve
suddenly when the driver of a
parked car opens the door.
This isn’t an uncommon
occurrence in the United
States for cyclists. Each year,
vehicles and bikes collide
more than 500,000 times.
But those numbers could
decrease, if drivers and cyclists
follow common rules of the road
and remain alert.
Summer, it’s a good time to
review safe practices. If drivers
and cyclists follow the law, stay
alert and remember to share the
road, perhaps more people can
enjoy spring’s breezes—and stay
safe.
Follow these tips to ensure safety
for all:
FOR DRIVERS
Avoid distractions, including
cell phones.
Yield to cyclists when turning.
During inclement weather,
give cyclists extra room when
passing them.
Check mirrors and blind spots
frequently for cyclists.
Don’t ever honk your horn at a
biker.
Before you open your car door,
always check for a cyclist.
FOR CYCLISTS
Always wear a helmet.
Follow the same traffic rules as
motorists.
Avoid cycling on sidewalks.
Wear bright colors during the
day and reflectors at night.
Ensure headlights and
taillights are working.
Use hand signals during all
turns.
Cycling Safety
As the weather warms, more bicycles dot the roadways, and
drivers and cyclists should be alert.
