SUMMER PROGRAM
WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT
Dress smart:
Wear loose
fitting clothes that are light in
color. Cotton clothing will keep
you cooler than many synthetics.
Keep cool:
Fill a spray bottle
with water and keep in the
refrigerator for a quick
refreshing spray to your face
after being outside.
Eat light:
Instead of hot foods,
try lighter summer fare
including frequent small meals
or snacks containing cold fruit or
low fat dairy products.
Use common sense:
If the
heat is impossible, stay indoors
when you can and avoid
activities in direct sunlight. Pay
special attention to anyone with
a chronic illness, as they may
dehydrate easily and be more
susceptible to heat–related
illness. Don’t forget that pets
also need protection from
dehydration and heat–related
illness too.
Tip from the Pros:
Hydrate:
It’s a good idea to
consume between six and eight 8-
ounce glasses of water a day.
Combat dehydration by drinking
plenty of water along with sports
drinks or other sources of
electrolytes. Avoid drinking
caffeine and alcoholic beverages as
this promotes dehydration. Keep
plastic bottles of water in the
freezer, grab one when you are
ready to go play tennis. As the ice
melts, you will have a supply of
cold water with you.
Replenish skin
: Even if you’re
serious about sun safety, it’s tough
to avoid the effects of the Southern
sun. Always apply SPF 30 (or
higher) before having fun in the
sun!
Change your exercise routine
:
If you like exercise outside take
advantage of cooler temperatures
in the early mornings and late
evenings. Exercise indoors some
days of the week if possible.
Otherwise, shorten the time of
extraneous exercise outside and
take more water breaks.
