On the volcanic Azorean islands,
locals make tiny flowers and nativity scenes
out of scales of fish,
their layered rings reveal their age.
Each canvas, a scale, a scalloped rock
unveils light years of porousness
until blue beads form a rosary.
Black basalt accepts drafts,
flutings, lineations, missing
cavities, strata, which
in my language means
loss.
