GAZETTF
OCTOBER 1992
Cr i t i cal I l lness Cover
Most people take good health for
granted. Serious illness is probably
one of the last things we want to
think about. However, critical
illnesses like cancer and heart disease
occur all too frequently. In fact the
chances of suffering a serious illness
like cancer or a heart attack before
age 65 have been estimated to be
five times greater than the risk of
dying.
Today's advanced medical care
means that more and more people
are surviving critical illnesses. Over
half of heart attack patients will be
alive a year later and over one third
of people diagnosed with a life
threatening cancer will still be alive
after five years.
In the short term the cost of medical
treatment, loss of earnings, or the
need for extra help in the home may
be the main problems. In the longer
term a complete change of lifestyle
may be required leading to a
permanent reduction in income. The
mortgage will still need to be paid
along with all the usual household
bills. On top of this there may be
substantial extra costs. Ongoing
medical care may be needed either at
home or in the hospital; or the home
may need to be adapted if disability
or paralysis result from a stroke or a
disease like multiple sclerosis.
One of the new products on the
assurance market has been designed
specifically to cope with this
situation. Critical illness cover
provides for the payment of a lump
sum once you survive 30 days after
diagnosis of any one of the
following most common critical
illnesses:
•
Cancer
•
Heart attack
•
Stroke
•
Multiple Sclerosis
•
Heart by-pass surgery
•
Kidney failure
•
Organ transplant
•
Paralysis
•
Permanent and total
disability
The cover can be arranged with or
without life assurance and its cost is
quite reasonable. For example
£50,000 cover to age 65 would cost
£30.60 per month for a male aged 40
and £29.07 per month for a female
aged 40.
We strongly recommend that you
consider effecting a certain amount
of critical illness cover as an
addition to any life cover that you
may already have and also that you
discuss this matter with your clients
whenever the opportunity arises.
