Act for Kids
is a not-for-profit
organisation that provides services
to children and families who have
experienced or are at risk of abuse and
neglect. The service runs programs
on the Gold Coast including parent
groups for children aged 3−5 years,
and a parent/child group for 2+ years
called ‘Talk Learn and Grow’. These
wonderful groups are based around
early interaction/attachment building,
play, language and literacy. They also
have specialists in home support who
work closely with families to support
play and interaction, and target book
sharing interactions.
Angie Canning (Speech Pathologist)
was in the fortunate position to be a
judge for the Speech Pathology
Australia Book of the Year Awards (3−5
years category) this year. Knowing
what a wonderful job ACT for Kids have
been doing, and being aware
of their book sharing interactions,
Angie generously donated the 12
beautiful hardcover picture books
(3−5 years category nominees) to their
service. The service was selected
as they do lots of great work with
preschool aged children and their
families, including story sharing sessions
targeting language and emergent
literacy skills and school readiness
groups.
