MISSION STATEMENT
To improve the quality of life for Surrey residents by providing an effectively-managed
transportation system that serves the mobility needs of individuals and businesses,
ensures the economic vitality of the City, is safe and secure, protects and enhances the
environment, and promotes sustainable modes of transportation (transit, walking and
cycling).
KEY PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
The Roads & Traffic Safety Utility is sustained through the work of four Engineering
Department divisions and sections: The Transportation Division, which plans for current
and future transportation needs; the Design & Construction Division, which designs and
builds new infrastructure in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner; the
Traffic Management Section, which ensures the efficient and safe operation of the
system; and the Streets Operations Section that ensures maintenance of the roads. The
shared goal of these groups is to enable mobility through safe and efficient pedestrian,
transit, bicycle and auto infrastructure.
2016 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Completed pedestrian/cyclist accessibility audit around all future LRT stations on the
104 Avenue / King George Blvd (“KGB”) LRT L-Line.
With TransLink, obtained Phase 1
funding for the KGB/104 Avenue LRT
line and submitted business case to
the Federal Government for full
funding of the project;
Finalized City-wide road tenure
research; and
Completed strategy for conversion of
all City street lights to LED by 2020.
Safe and Active Schools Program—
implemented 35 additional
construction projects valued at $5.8M
around schools to improve safety; and
Through evidence based analysis,
have implemented and are monitoring
transportation safety improvements at
5 intersections in Newton.
