uh. Look at that. She did it again.” Gabriella figured she was talking to herself; she
knew that Jesse was too busy checking out the snakes in the reptile cage.
“What? Who are you talking to?” Maybe he was paying attention.
“Watch Mr. Wei’s dog, Ginger,” Gabriella said. “Every time a customer comes in, she pulls
herself up out of her bed and goes to greet the new person. Then she goes back to her bed be-
hind the counter and gets all settled in again. When the door opens, she does the whole thing
over. I’ve been watching her. This has happened five times since we’ve been standing here look-
ing at these snakes.”
Jesse looked away from a python, which was slowly swallowing a frozen mouse.
