Try it Yourself!

How do animals, like sheep or alpaca, or polar bears, stay out in the cold

and wet weather without freezing? Do wool socks or wool mittens really

keep you warm and dry? Find out in this short experiment!

Suggested Materials:

Pair of wool socks or mittens

2 plastic cups, with lid

Thermometers

Hot tap water

1. Soak one sock or mitten in room temperature tap water. Wring it out so that it

is still damp but not dripping.

2. Carefully place a plastic cup inside each sock or mitten. Fold down the top so

you can access the cup easily.

3. Pour hot tap water into each cup and carefully place the top on them. Insert a

thermometer through the hole for the straw in each one.
