r. Wei, can I please get two dozen large crickets?” Jesse finally was getting around
to the purpose of his trip to the pet store.
“Coming right up. How is your gecko these days?”
“He’s doing well. He seems to be eating a lot more lately. I think it’s probably because it’s
warmer now. He seemed to really slow down during the winter.”
Mr. Wei continued to count the fast-moving crickets crawling around in the clear plastic bag.
“Well, that is what happens with cold-blooded reptiles.” Snapping the rubber band used to seal
the bag, he handed it to Jesse. “Cold temperatures don’t only affect reptiles, you know. Have you
noticed a difference in your crickets, too?”
Jesse held up the bag and looked at the insects squirming and crawling over each other. “No,
not really.”
