ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE
The Climbing Club is now a year old
and has a strong base of committed
members. At the beginning of term,
Captain Casper Sunley wrote to OSE
Hugh Saffery and John Dart who had
both been committed climbers and
invited them to become Senior
Members of the Club, and both were
pleased to accept.
Over the course of the year, we
developed our own award scheme
largely based around the NICAS system,
and were pleased to see Jøergen
Reinboth (
Ravnanger Ungdomsskole
) and
Oscar Inglis-Jones (
St Edmund’s
) complete
their Foundation Awards, and Arthur
Churchill (
Dulwich Prep London
) his Lead
Climbing Award.
Independent Schools
Climbing Competition
In March, a team of William Webb
(
Dragon
), Oliver Ferneyhough (
Caldicott
)
and Jøergen Reinboth represented
Teddies at the annual Independent
Schools Climbing Competition hosted
by Westminster School at The Reach,
Woolwich. This was our first time in the
competition, and it was hard to know
what to expect. The boys climbed well and
their stamina was hugely tested over five
hours as each sought to accrue as many
points as possible across the disciplines of
lead climbing, top roping and bouldering.
Despite a strong field featuring
experienced teams (who train three
times a week) particularly those from
Tonbridge, Harrow and Eton, all three
boys pulled out personal bests in the top
roping category. William achieved second
place in the senior lead category, and
Oliver won the junior lead trophy.
Huge thanks to Ed Edwards, Steve
Ferneyhough, Johan Reinboth and Ben
Bishop for their support and help on
the day.

Squash
By Andrew Grounds, Master i/c Squash
It has been an outstanding year for squash
with the boys’ 1st V reaching the National
Trophy Finals day. After wins against West
Somerset College, Windsor Boys’ School and
Bedford School, the senior boys’ 1st V squash
team travelled to Nottingham for Finals day
playing Whitgift in the semi-final. In a close,
tense tie, wins from James George (
New
College
) and Fynn Baring (
Dragon
) meant the
tie was down to the final match with Edward
Beccle (
Cothill House
) which he narrowly lost
12-10 in the deciding game. In the regular
season, there have been excellent wins
against Bradfield, Marlborough, Cheltenham,
Radley, Stowe and Westminster with telling
contributions from captain Horatio Scott
Lyon (
Caldicott
) and James Moore-Stanley
(
Ibstock Place
).
The girls’ V, led by Camille Bonini (
Marlston
House
) and Natasha Tisminieszky (
Banda,
Nairobi
), won their only fixture of the term
against Marlborough. In the junior section,
we entered the National U15 cup for the first
time which included a win against Windsor
Boys’ School but were knocked out of the
competition by a strong Highgate outfit. It
has been a difficult year for the juniors as
they have battled against superior opposition
but there has been a large group of Shells
attending training which bodes well for
the future. Basil Zirinis (
Bede’s Prep
), Ollie
Corbett (
Moulsford Prep
), Giles Wordsworth
(
New College
) and Hamish Smart (
Northcote
Lodge
) all made impressive contributions to
the season and I hope to see these players
develop in the coming years.
