Realities
of the
Workplace
The goal of working in sports starts early
and often can be inspired by a desire to keep
playing. However, after the reality hits that
99.9 percent of the world does not have the
ability to play at the pro level, there are still ways to be part
of the team. Being part of a team is not always glamorous,
however. Pro sports is a business, and even if analytics is your
part in it, expect to work long and hard.
Consider that if you are traveling with the team, you might
be leaving the ballpark at night at the conclusion of a
homestand
.
Around midnight, after packing up at the ballpark, you would
take a bus to the airport, fly to the next city, take another bus
to the hotel, check in at four or five o’clock in the morning, and
then be up and running later that day for a game at night. Three
or four days later, you do that all over again. That’s just baseball.
