SADSI news

APRIL /MAY 1996

On 15 February this year Paul Murray

was elected Auditor of the 112th

Session of SADSI. To date Paul has

appointed a committee and held

several meetings. From these a broad

outline of the events which SADSI

intends to organise has emerged.

On the social side, the calendar for

the year ahead will contain many a

"Pound-A-Pint" night. We've already

started as we mean to go on, kicking

off on Thursday, 14 March with a

wine reception, followed by a debate

entitled "Dublin 4 makes the law".

The speeches were many and varied,

highly original, with some resorting

to poetry. Another successful "Pound-

a-Pint" night was held on 25 April.

Spurred on by these successes, the

next event will be a debate between

SADSI and the Dublin Solicitors Bar

Association (DSBA), on Thursday,

30 May, entitled "That legalese is

pompous, arrogant and obscure and

has had its day" followed by a disco.

In addition, we hope to organise a

couple of table quizzes and over the

summer months we envisage holding

a barbeque and hopefully even a

sports day!

The Midsummer's Ball, the main

event of the summer, has been booked

for 22 June. This year it will be held

in the Great Southern Hotel in

Galway. This same venue was used

two years ago to host the Ball and

anyone who was there that night can

vouch for its success. We would hope

to make a weekend out of it and, as

more events come to light, we will

keep you posted. Nearer to the date

we will send you out information

detailing cost of the tickets,

accommodation, travel etc.

A two dimensional approach to sport

is envisaged this year, namely we will

organise both competitive and non-

competitive events. On the

competitive side, a number of hockey

and soccer matches are in the

pipeline. The Dublin Business Houses

League has organised a hockey

tournament. This will take place in

the Three Rock Rovers Club, in

Marley Park, between 29 April and 17

May. If you are interested in

participating could you please contact

Leonie Power,

whose telephone

number you will find below. We hope

to increase apprentice participation,

so mixed sporting events, which

allow everyone to join in are high on

the agenda. We have a number of

ideas but we would like to hear of any

which you may have.

Since the foundation of SADSI in

1884, the Society has presented two

Gold Medals - one for Oratory and

one for Composition. Regrettably, the

Gold Medal for Composition has not

been awarded in recent years and the

present Committee are anxious to

revive this worthwhile competition.

Entries should consist of written

pieces, of approximately 2,000-3,000

words, on any topic of contemporary

legal interest. Entries should be

received by us, before 1 September

1996 and these will be judged by a

distinguished, independent judging

panel. The winning entrant, will be

awarded a specially commissioned

Gold Medal and we are currently

working on sponsorship for prizes.

The winning entries will be published

in the

Gazette.

We have established an Education and

Welfare Sub-Committee and we have

compiled a welfare pack, on issues

which affect apprentices such as:

grants, social welfare benefits, PRSI

entitlements etc. Also, we are in the

process of establishing, in conjunction

with the Law Society, an

accommodation register to facilitate

apprentices in finding accommodation

for their courses.

By now every apprentice should have

received a short questionnaire from

us. We are here to represent your

interests and to mirror your views. As

you will appreciate, to do this

effectively, feedback is necessary, so

your replies are essential.

Finally, the committee would like to

congratulate the Jessup Moot Court

team on its success in Washington.

Furthermore, if anyone has any

suggestions, we would be glad to hear

from you. To enable this we have

included a list of the names, work

places and telephone numbers of the

committee members.
