The Law Society Athletics Club

attended the Irish University

Athletics Championships in Antrim

on April 20 last. The team consisted

of

John Menton

(Arthur Cox),

James

Candon

(Ahern O'Shea & Co),

Mark

Walsh

(BCM Hanby Wallace) and

John O'Connor

(O'Connor) (Coach)

and managed to finish seventh overall

ahead of a number of Universities and

third level institutions.

James Candon

(a universities boxer and cousin of

Irish Olympic hopeful

Paddy

McGrath)

was competing for the first

time for the club and managed to get

to the final of the shot putt and the

351b weight for distance therefore

gaining valuable points for the club.

Mark Walsh

competed in a very

competitive 5000 metre race and

finished a creditable eighth.

John

Menton

matched his performance of

last year by winning four gold medals

for the second year in a row in the

Hammer, Discus, Shot Putt and 35 lb

weight throw. He also managed to

break the record for the most number

of medals won by an individual in

Irish university championships

bringing his total to 14 gold medals.

The Club is very grateful to the

Society for again helping to fund the

team to compete in these

championships. It is hoped that the

club tradition will continue and any

apprentice or solicitor (qualified in

the last year) is eligible to compete in

these championships. If you are

interested in competing next year

(first competition February 1997)

then start training now! And contact
