The people, places & events that defined 2017
Maple Ridge News photographer Collen Flanagan caught up with Pavel Romanchak at Whonnock Lake in early January. He
was fishing for crapple, rainbow and cutthroat trout. Despite a dedicated six hours out on the ice with his friend Vladimir
Denynyuk, they came up empty handed. The winter of 2016-2017 was one of the coldest, and snowiest, in recent years.

The next pages of our Citizens Report are a photographic journey through the year. The City of Maple Ridge is
more than numbers and graphs, these photos help reveal the day-to-day life of our community. The photos show
the passing of seasons, introduce the incredible citizens who inspire us and the many community events and
celebrations that make this an amazing place to live. We would like to thank the talented journalists at the Maple
Ridge News for sharing images with us for this publication. Their photos, along with images taken by City staff and
local photographers, give us a glimpse of the year that was. Enjoy!
