The major economic activities in the LVB are agriculture,

fisheries, wildlife conservation, tourism, mining and

power generation (Lake Victoria Basin Commission

2007a). Other key sectors include the service industry,

trade, forestry and telecommunications. There has been

significant growth in many of these economic activities

over recent years, which, in some cases, has resulted in

environmental degradation, including water pollution,

declining fish catches and soil erosion.

Expansion in regional trade has led to the emergence

and expansion of urban centres along the shores of the

Lake, resulting in an increase in point source pollution

of the Lake waters. Some of the major urban centres on

the shoreline of Lake Victoria include Entebbe, Kisumu

and Mwanza.
