Mathematics provides a lens through which we can observe and analyze the world around us in both
quantifiable and abstract ways. It equips us with tools that help us pose questions, test conjectures,
offer predictions, and make informed decisions. Mathematics gives us the language to communicate
our understandings and evidence with clarity and precision. It is both pervasive and vital in its use in
nearly all realms of professional life.
Students will think critically, examine and solve problems through a mathematical lens and effectively
draw upon their repertoire to:
•
analyze situations in (un)familiar contexts;
•
make connections to and between mathematical forms;
•
devise, plan, execute, adjust and persevere through solutions; and
•
check the reasonableness of their work and reflect upon its implications and usefulness
GRADE 7
Grade 7 Mathematics
Topics in Grade 7 Mathematics include the use of manipulatives and concrete materials. This course
includes a study of numbers, measurement, geometry, patterning and algebra and data management
and probability. Students are expected to develop their computations skills as well as their mathematical
understandings. The mathematical process and problem solving skills are an important part of this course.
GRADE 8
Grade 8 Mathematics
The Grade 8 Mathematics program is designed to consolidate and enhance mathematical skills
and understandings in the setting of applications and problem solving. Emphasis will be placed
on generalizations and abstractions appropriate to the students’ mathematical maturity. This
course continues the study of numbers, measurement, geometry, patterning and algebra and data
management and probability. Students are expected to develop their computations skills as well
as their mathematical understandings. The mathematical process and problem solving skills are an
important part of this course.
GRADE 9
MPM1D
– Principles of Mathematics, Grade 9, Academic
1 CREDIT
This course enables students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts related to
algebra, analytic geometry, and measurement and geometry through investigation, the effective use
of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will investigate relationships, which they will then
generalize as equations of lines, and will determine the connections between different representations
of a linear relation. They will also explore relationships that emerge from the measurement of
three-dimensional figures and two-dimensional shapes. Students will reason mathematically and
