The study of English touches on virtually every aspect of a student’s life at Havergal. The program
offers both a series of core courses and a range of more specialised elective courses, all of which are
founded on three goals.
The first goal is to have a student master skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking to enable
her to function effectively in her society. Of equal importance is the development of a profound
understanding of literature and media as the means by which she can build a vision of a society
that contributes to the betterment of the one in which she lives. Finally, the program seeks to foster
an appreciation of and delight in literature that will serve the student as a source of recreation and
education throughout her life.
