It’s been nine years since Robert

Rodriguez teamed up with comic

book artist Frank Miller to bring the

latter’s monochrome metropolis

Sin City to the screen. Using

digital sets and an A-list cast, the

pair successfully translated the

aesthetic of the graphic novels,

creating a groundbreaking new

look for comic book movies. In this

return visit, Miller and Rodriguez have four more stories to

tell, some of them featuring familiar faces who met their

end in the first film. So, what gives? The Sin City timeline is

fluid, with prequel tales – including the titular

A Dame to Kill

For

– complementing two new stories written exclusively

for the screen. Which means Mickey Rourke’s lovable, slab-

jawed rogue Marv is back! So too is Jessica Alba’s dancer,

the girls from Old Town, and Dwight McCarthy – who used

to look like Clive Owen but now resembles Josh Brolin,

prior to a facial reconstruction.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill

looks even more visually striking than its predecessor, and

fans will find this belated return to Miller’s mean streets

well worth the wait. • See page 40

Writer-director David Ayer moves

from the urban jungle of

Training

Day

and

End of Watch

to the

battleground of World War II

with this impactful combat film

that possesses the same sense

of authenticity that distinguished

his earlier cop dramas. Brad

Pitt plays Sgt. Don Collier – aka

Wardaddy – who commandeers

a Sherman tank christened Fury

(by name and by nature), leading

his band of brothers (Shia LaBeouf, Jon Bernthal,

Michael Peña) and a rookie driver (Logan Lerman) in

an attack on a German platoon behind enemy lines.

There are echoes of Pitt’s Nazi-killing turn in

Inglourious

Basterds

(albeit less OTT) in Wardaddy, and the

supporting cast are equally impressive (yes, even

Shia LaBeouf!), with Lerman’s newcomer providing a

crucial conduit into the hell of war for the viewer. Ayer

deftly balances the chaos of the battlefield and the

camaraderie of the tank crew within the claustrophobic

confines of the war machine, delivering one of the

most gripping and visceral war movies since
