If you haven’t read Gillian Flynn’s
bestselling novel and have
managed to avoid plot spoilers,
you’re in for a treat. This cracking
thriller will suck you in, chew you
up and spit you out two-and-a-
half hours later, utterly impressed
and totally exhilarated. Even if
you have read the book (which
Flynn herself adapted for the screen), the story of Nick
Dunne (Ben Affleck), whose wife Amy (Rosamund Pike)
mysteriously vanishes from their home on the morning
of their fifth wedding anniversary, is a gripping, scathing
critique on modern marriage and media manipulation.
That’s all we’re going to reveal here, but suffice to say
the ‘he said/she said’ approach to solving the central
mystery keeps things consistently unpredictable. This
is perfect material for director David Fincher (or Brian
De Palma for that matter), who tackles the almost
Hitchcockian proceedings with his trademark austerity
and technical proficiency, albeit this time with a streak
of wicked humour that adds to the overall entertainment
value. In short, a must-see. • See page 42
“Valar morghulis.” Picking
up pretty much straight after
the shocking conclusion of
the third series, season four
continues the main story arcs,
while introducing a major
new royal family, the Martells.
They’ve arrived in King’s
Landing for the wedding of
the monstrous King Joffey but
their leader, the wonderfully
debauched Red Viper, also has
a score to settle with the Lannisters. Elsewhere, Jon
Snow struggles to convince his skeptical superiors
about the threat posed by Mance Rayder’s army of
wildlings beyond the Wall, Daenerys learns that ruling
cities can be harder than conquering them, and the
surviving Stark kids continue on their respective
journeys in the wilderness. Although this season
doesn’t include anything quite as shocking as the
Red Wedding, a number of major characters meet
incredibly messy ends, and there’s a bloody, episode-
long skirmish that rivals season two’s Battle of the
Blackwater. Needless to say,
GoT
remains a must-
own TV juggernaut. • See page 40

David Fincher explained
that one of the reasons he

could pass for an older

Jessica Chastain was also
