Space Dandy Part 1

I

t’s a massive shonen month with all the

laughs, action and adventure you could

wish for, as well as the long awaited

arrival of

Space Dandy Part 1

. Why should you

be excited for Space Dandy? Well... he’s a dandy

guy... in space! It also doesn’t hurt that these

pompadour laden, hilariously kooky adventures

are animated by BONES (

Fullmetal Alchemist:

Brotherhood

) and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe

(

Cowboy Bebop

).

The regular Naruto and Naruto Shippuden

series’ are great, no doubt, but there’s just

something about Naruto movies that raise the bar

even higher.

Naruto the Movie: Road to Ninja

smashes its way onto DVD and Blu-ray with an

action-packed yet harrowing adventure in which

Naruto faces the mysterious shinobi, who is

responsible for the death of his parents.

Fairy Tail

is still going strong with

Collection

14

hitting shelves this month. And with it comes a

fierce battle between the wizarding world’s most

powerful and deadly guilds. The Grand Magic

Games may have made Fairy Tail look like chumps

for the last seven years, but all that is about to

change now that its A-team is back in action.

Things didn’t go quite to plan when the Straw

Hats arrived at Thriller Bark, and now in

One

Piece (Uncut) Collection 29

, Luffy has lost his

shadow! Luckily for Monkey D. and the similarly

shadowless Zoro and Sanji, Brook is willing to

assist, but only if they can help him defeat a

zombie samurai. It’s off-the-wall shenanigans like

this that makes

One Piece

so entertaining. “An

afro-wearing skeleton needs to defeat a zomb-urai

in order to help his rubber-man friend who lost his

shadow? You must be talking about

One Piece

!”

It seems like an impossible mission! Goku

finally faces off against his most powerful and

dangerous foe yet: Majin Buu. Desperately

overpowered, Goku and the Z-Fighters need to

take drastic action to save the world. But is Goku

willing to merge with longtime rival Vegeta

using the Fusion Technique? Well, you’ll just

have to check out

Dragon Ball Z Season 9

on butt-kicking Blu-ray and see for yourself.

Once a feared warrior and elite combat

trainer, Raul Chaser finds himself working

in customer service. An early nominee

for the “Longest Anime Title Name

of the Year” award,

Yu-Sibu: I

Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I

Reluctantly Decided to Get

a Job

is filled with comedy,

slapstick action, and as

advised on the cover, frequent

animated nudity. Yowza!

ANIME

ROUND-UP

Anime

Hairstyles

With such a bombastic pompadour

on the menu this month, it seems

only natural that we reflect upon

the best and most recognisable

hairstyles in anime. Because you’re

worth it! Apologies to those follically

challenged characters who didn’t

make the cut. This means you, Krillin!

5

Asuka Langley Soryu –

The style of Asuka’s hair may

not be particularly distinctive, but her

auburn hair coupled with her red Eva

headgear complete the look.

4

Motoko Kusanagi –

Fusing

80’s punk rock with office worker

delivers an aesthetic which is unlike

any other. If it’s short at the front, long

at the sides and purple all over, you

know it’s Major Kusanagi.

3

Sailor Moon –

Everyone’s

favourite mahou shoujo (magical

girl) is unmistakable with her golden

locks and mini jam donut-looking...

head... things. Does it add to her

magical abilities? No, but it certainly

is iconic.

2

Astro Boy –

This little robot-that-

could has such a distinctive profile

that it was used in silhouette as the

episode introduction screen. Impossible

to convert to the physical world, his 2D

double peaked style is quintessentially

anime.

1

Super Saiyan Goku –

Seeing Goku go full Super

Saiyan for the first time when

fighting Frieza was almost

as glorious as seeing Goku’s

blonde mane. When you’re

talking about iconic anime

hair, this ‘do takes the

cake.
