Party Headquarters (excerpt)

Georgi Tenev

Georgi Tenev (born 1969

in

Sofia)

is a novelist, short

story writer, playwright,

screenwriter for film and

television, and TV host, and

a

founder

of

the

Triumviratus Art Group.

Major topics in his work include the cultural and

ideological void in post-totalitarian societies and the

consequent emerging of counter-cultures; the fall of

utopias, and social amnesias. He examines quasi-religion

and disbelief, barbarism and revolution, the

Holocaust,

and

the problem of evil. Recent writing often addresses

environmental issues.

Party Headquarters

deals with the social paradoxes of

post- communist

Bulgarian society, in the horrible shadow of

the

Chernobyl disaster.

It won the

Vick Foundation

Award

for Novel of the Year, and enjoys its English-language debut

in our pages.

Translated from Bulgarian by Angela Rodel.
