Page Background

Living by her father’s motto

that “monogamy isn’t realistic”,

men’s magazine journalist Amy

(Amy Schumer) is a sexually

voracious serial dater who’s

suddenly faced with the scary

prospect of commitment when

she meets nice guy sports-

doctor Aaron (Bill Hader).

Skit-com specialist Schumer’s

movie debut has immediately

cemented her as a comedy

superstar and her whip-smart screenplay, which

subverts the rom-com formula by reversing gender

stereotypes, is tailored to showcase her irrepressible

wit. Coupled with director Judd Apatow, whose

prior forays into this genre successfully balanced

vulgarity and charm (

Knocked Up

,

The 40-Year-Old

Virgin

), they’re a perfect match, and the result is

one of the best and funniest romantic comedies in

years. There’s also great supporting roles for NBA

star LeBron James, WWE hunk John Cena, and a

hilarious and unrecognisable Tilda Swinton as Amy’s

ruthless boss.

An off the rails rom-com

TRAINWRECK

Easier to find on the internet

than a photo of Kim Kardashian

balancing a champagne bottle

on her behind, the minions have

taken the world by monsoon.

We grew to love these adorable

little corn cobs in the first

two Despicable Me films, so

it was only a matter of time

before they got their very own

feature, which just happens to

be an origin story. Seemingly

immortal (they’ve been around

since the dinosaurs roamed the Earth), Bob, Kevin

and Stuart set out on behalf of the tribe to find a new

master to serve, and wind up assisting supervillain

Scarlett Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). Following

a hysterical history lesson and a trip to Villain-Con in

Orlando, it’s off to swinging sixties’ London, where

Scarlett intends to swipe Queen Elizabeth’s crown.

It’s all appropriately adorable, and kids of all ages will

love it. Whether or not the minions can carry a spin-off

franchise on their own remains to be seen, but on the

strength of this first solo outing (which grossed over

$1 billion in global box office), it’s safe to say these

little yellow critters will be back.

What exactly are they, and where did they come from?

Amy Schumer’s original

screenplay called for a “Tilda

Swinton Type” to play her

boss at the men’s magazine.

Judd Apatow called up Tilda

Swinton and offered her the part.

Apparently, Swinton is fan of

Apatow and was looking to join

his comedy universe.
