Loud bells and amplifiers are the most common-

ly requested equipment. Many other devices are

also available such as flashing lights, speech

amplifiers, speakerphones, large button phones,

and artificial larynx.

Hearing and speech impaired persons using a

telecommunication device for the deaf (TDD)

can access the Operator located in Oakland,

for assistance with the following:

A portable telecommunications device for cus-

tomers with a speech or hearing impairment is

available through California Telephone Access

Program, battery or AC-operated, this device

sends and receives messages using standard

telephones through a system of flashing lights

and electronic readout display. Accessories for

the unit include portable carrying case, a printer

attachment, a ring signaler and an automatic

answer and recording device.

Number is Important

When your telephone is preceded by your area

code, it is the only one like it in the United States

or Canada. Show your area code and telephone

number on your stationery, statements and

advertising items. It makes it easier to reach you.

California Relay Service

This service relays calls between a person using

a TDD and any other telephone user within the

United States. It also allows a person without a

TDD to call a TDD user. Specially trained per-

sonnel are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a

week, 365 days a year to relay the call. There is

no extra charge for this service.

Long distance or locally charged calls placed

through the California Relay Service will be billed

at discounted Sprint rates. To use the California

Avoidance of Lawful Charges

Persons using unauthorized calling card num-

bers or unauthorized telephone numbers to

avoid charges will be prosecuted. Anyone

violating Section 502.7, California Penal Code,

by attempting to avoid lawful charges for tele-

phone service may be fined up to $5,000 and

imprisoned up to 5 years.
