1.0 POLICY

T

he City of Greensboro continually strives to maintain a safe, productive, and professional

work environment for its employees. This environment is reinforced by a uniform, fair, and

consistent administration of corrective action. Employees may be dismissed at the will of the City

Manager or his/her designee at any time.

2.0 PURPOSE

T

his policy is to provide information to employees and supervisors about the behaviors and

performance that are expected by the City of Greensboro. This policy highlights behaviors

that are considered unacceptable and provides guidance to supervisors about the rules and

procedures that are to be followed in dealing with unacceptable behaviors and performance.

3.0 SCOPE

Not benefit eligible employees and employees in their original probationary status are covered only by

Section 5.1.D. All other employees are covered by all sections of this policy.

4.0 DEFINITIONS

4.1

Administrative Leave

– A type of paid leave a department may use while conducting

an investigation into an alleged employee misconduct/policy violation/performance related

issue.

4.2

Benefit Eligible

- Full time and part time employees who are eligible for coverage and

participation in the City’s benefit programs in addition to legally mandated coverage.

See the appendix document, Pre-Placement Drug Testing Procedures on page 417.

4.3

Coaching

– A process whereby a supervisor or manager provides ongoing constructive

feedback to an employee about his/her work performance and/or behavior.

4.4

Corrective Action

– An action initiated by a supervisor to address and correct an

employee’s unacceptable behavior and/or performance. Corrective action is intended to

maintain compliance with established rules of conduct and performance, not merely to

punish an employee. (Note: Employee appeals of corrective action will conform to procedures

outlined in this policy not those in Policy H-2, Employee Complaint Resolution. See 6.7

Appeals section in this policy for more information.

4.5

Corrective Action Decision Form

- A form which documents the written warning

decision or the decision from the Pre-corrective Action Hearing and is given to the employee.
