1.0 POLICY

ach budgeted position is assigned to a standard job classification within the City of
Greensboro’s official Classification Plan (also referred to as the Job Classifications).
2.0 PURPOSE
P
ositions are categorized into job classifications according to duties and responsibilities to
ensure similar treatment in personnel and salary administration.
3.0 SCOPE
This policy applies to all budgeted positions of the City.
4.0 DEFINITIONS
4.1
Classification
- A group of positions in which subject-matter of work, level of difficulty
and responsibility, and qualification requirements are sufficiently similar to warrant allocation
to the same job title and control point.
4.2
Class Specification
- A broad, general written statement of the typical duties,
responsibilities, and qualification requirements of all positions included in the same class.
4.3
Job Classifications
- All established job classes and control points to which they are
assigned.
4.4
Job Evaluation Committee (JEC)
- A committee comprised of representatives from
throughout the City charged with evaluation and classification recommendations for all
benefitted positions. The JEC is a diverse group of experienced managers and employees
familiar with Human Resources policies and practices.
4.5
Occupational Group
- A series of job classifications in associated or related occupations,
professions, or activities.
4.6
Position
- A unique budget allocation to which an established set of duties and
responsibilities is assigned.
5.0 ORGANIZATIONAL RULES
5.1 The Compensation Manager, with the support of the Job Evaluation Committee (JEC) and
under the direction of the Human Resources Director, is responsible for revising and maintaining
the Classification Plan for the City.
