music lovers! This month it's been a
little quieter (even for a gig-trotting butterfly like myself)
but with the announcement of the Splendour in the
Grass bill for July, that's all about to change. Firstly though, I did
get along to Mr
Paolo Nutini
at Melbourne's delightful Palais
Theatre in April, and it was a most surprising and engaging
evening of music; he turns a lovely tune and he really can sing!
Speaking of hitherto undiscovered gems, have you heard
Marlon
Williams?
The Kiwi ex-pat is my kind of country singer – great
pipes, droll sense of humour and boy does he have the songs! I
caught his album launch and was thoroughly impressed. But the
unveiling of yet another amazing Splendour line-up for the annual
festival in Byron Bay really got me excited. While it's always
good to catch regular visitors like
The DandyWarhols
and solid
talent like
Boy & Bear,
let's face it: the opportunity to see the
real kings of Britpop,
Blur,
(see below) on what will surely be
their last Australian visit as they promote new album
The Magic
Whip
, is truly something special. Add to this
Florence and the
Machine
playing new material,
TheWombats
essaying the
impressive
Glitterbug
and
Mark Ronson
bringing the uptown
funk Down Under, there's just nowhere else to be but Byron in
July!

The JB Listener
(see below – bearing a

talking about all things
vinyl, and the major return of the
format.
JB Hi-Fi stores are not only
stocking classic ‘heritage’
releases on the black wax, but
brand new releases as well!
Our man at JB says the format’s
vitality goes well beyond hip inner
city types: “It's traditional older
vinyl buyers and young people
who are into artists like maybe
San Cisco
or
Hosier
; they're also
buying vinyl. It's young
folk, old folk, and
everyone in between,"
he says.
Of course, it's an
aesthetic choice as
much as an audio-
based one. "If you're
really into an artist,
there's nothing like
picking up a vinyl record of your
favourite," he says. "It's a growing
physical format. We offer our
customers options: CDs are still
the dominant physical format,
and of course we offer over 20
million tracks on our streaming
service
JB HI-FI NOW
. JB Hi-Fi
is still about music and servicing
the music customer: not only
with range, but with a variety of
ways to hear it." And while JB
remain committed to the CD, and
the ongoing development of their
JB HI-FI NOW music streaming
service, the commitment to vinyl
has been customer-driven “We
rely on our staff for feedback
from customers, and they were
telling us there was a market
there for vinyl,“ says The JB
Listener. And remember, if you
need something to play your vinyl
on, JB can sell you a turntable!
("We're selling more turntables
than ever," says our man on the
ground.)
If you can’t find that hot
release or must-own, beautiful
smelling black circle (sorry...
we’re getting carried away), you
