50 North American Natural Resources: Timber and Forest Products
Forests Today
Many of the efforts to protect, preserve, manage, and conserve today’s forests and
natural resources were the result of the actions of President Theodore Roosevelt.
Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States, and he has come to be known
as the “Conservationist President.”
President Roosevelt took office in 1901. He formed the US Forest Service in
1905, and he appointed Gifford Pinchot as the first chief of this new agency. Pinchot
described the mission of the agency as being “to provide the greatest amount of good
for the greatest amount of people in the long run.”
