constantly assess and look out for risks
in their areas of operation. If we identify
a risk, do something about it and then
re-evaluate every so often to ensure the
risk has effectively been negated,” he

H&S
At the time of writing this article, a group
of dedicated health and safety practi-
tioners were gathering at the Aspasa
offices to revise its health and safety audit
document. Input from these specialists
will be built into the revised programme
and circulated for comment. It will also be
sent to the DMR for their input.
Pienaar says this document is a liv-
ing document and needs to remain up
to date with all minimum requirements,
“so that we as an industry can comply. We
have developed a document for borrow
pits and other small operations.”
He urges that should any practitioners
or line managers have any issues about
the audit programme, to please send him
your input so that it can be included.
“South African quarries that are mem-
bers of Aspasa are on par with the best
quarries internationally,” he adds. “We are
extremely proud of the standards that
our members have worked so hard to
establish.”
