Breast Conserving Therapy
 Radiation therapy is adjuvant in breast conserving
strategies:
 Whole breast following lumpectomy.
 Potential side effects:
 Acute: painful erythema & desquamation.
 Chronic: hyper-pigmentation, fibrosis, fat necrosis, pain.
 Long term risks: heart disease and secondary cancers
 Control the incidence and severity of side effects:
 Optimize geometry
 Minimize “hot spots”
 Increase treatment duration (5 to 7 weeks).
