Exploring Trade-Offs in IMRT

Often difficult to balance coverage & sparing.

Multi-objective Pareto optimization formalizes

the process – Multi-Criteria optimization.

Plan is

Pareto optimal

when no other plan

is strictly better in at least one objective

function while being no worse in every other

objective.

Method:

Pre compute a database of Pareto optimal

plans, meeting a constraint (e.g. Dmin in PTV)

Planner or MD can interactively navigate

through these plans, manipulating weights to

understand in real time the tradeoffs involved

in the particular case

With this new capability, one can generate

tradeoff curves

, or

Pareto fronts

.
