Exploring Trade-Offs in IMRT
 Often difficult to balance coverage & sparing.
 Multi-objective Pareto optimization formalizes
the process – Multi-Criteria optimization.
 Plan is “Pareto optimal” when no other plan
is strictly better in at least one objective
function while being no worse in every other
objective.
 Method:
 Pre compute a database of Pareto optimal
plans, meeting a constraint (e.g. Dmin in PTV)
 Planner or MD can interactively navigate
through these plans, manipulating weights to
understand in real time the tradeoffs involved
in the particular case
 With this new capability, one can generate
“tradeoff curves”, or “Pareto fronts”.
