Over one million homes and businesses
in Scotland have access to superfast
broadband. As part of the £2.5 billion UK
rollout, OpenReach engineers have laid
down around 1,850km of fiber optic cables,
and installed 3,500 new cabinets.
BT Scotland director Brendan Dick, visiting
Hawick-basedcompany Emtelle, producers
of 29millionmeters of cable duct for BT, said:
“Today marks a high point in Scotland’s
development as one of Europe’s leading
nations for high speed communications.
Scotland’s fiber infrastructure is growing
rapidly, with another 400,000 premises to be
passedbeforeour commercial programme
is complete.
“In addition to the direct benefits of fiber
for Scottish businesses, the deployment
is good news for our supply chain, with
Emtelle being a great example of a local
company that’s thriving [through] its
support of this enormous undertaking.”
Scotland’s fiber optic broadband is
expected to cover 85 percent of the
country by the end of 2015, and 95 percent
by the end of 2017.
