This follow-up to the 1996 alien

invasion epic doesn’t disappoint

because it delivers exactly what

you expect. It also satisfies

the criteria for a good sequel:

repurposing what was great

about the first film to serve

a new story, and setting up a

franchise in the process. And

yes, there is a gag involving the

White House. In the decades

since the “war of ‘96”, global peace has prevailed

and the aliens’ technology used to strengthen Earth’s

defences. But all that counts for nothing when a

3,000-mile wide mothership answers the original

invaders’ distress call and proceeds to suck up entire

cities with its own gravity field, dropping them on

top of other cities. It’s going to take more than Jeff

Goldblum uploading malware to defeat them this

time – could a mysterious alien orb be the key to

saving the planet?

I

ndependence Day

was essentially

a disaster movie, but

Resurgence

is Emmerich’s

answer to

Aliens

– an action-heavy sci-fi sequel with

bigger FX and even more characters and creatures,

including a giant alien queen. Sci-fi fans are obliged

to check out this huge and ridiculously entertaining

blockbuster. And everyone else should, too. Go on,

you know you want to.

SH

It’s hard to think of a film that’s

sparked so much vitriol online

(before anyone had actually

seen it, remember) than Paul

Feig’s girl-powered redux of

Ivan Reitman’s 1984 comedy

classic.

Ghostbusters

has been

haunted by derision since it was

first announced, a fact that’s

addressed early in the movie,

and later when the film delivers a self-critique as

Kristen Wiig’s character notes, “It’s not terrible at

all.” And she’s right, it’s actually pretty good. This

isn’t the first “untouchable classic” to be remade

and it won’t be the last, and Feig has wisely ensured

it’s not just a tired retread of what has gone before.

Instead, it’s an alternate universe version where

the ‘busters are a sisterhood comprised of Kristen

Wiig’s physicist, Melissa McCarthy’s paranormal

researcher, Kate McKinnon’s steampunk scientist,

and Leslie Jones’s subway worker. When you think

it could easily have been Will Ferrell, Ed Helms,

Adam Sandler and Kevin Hart doing the busting, the

gender switch is a great idea, and one that works.

Leave your love of the original on the shelf and

consider this one as a novelty cover version of an

old favourite.
