Replacing the dark woods of yester-year
with a simpler, fresher look; stylish ply-
wood makes a Scandi-inspired statement
in furniture, lighting and floors. Influenced
by this trend and the global move to mini-
malism, South African maker and designer
of bespoke timber lighting and furniture,
minima, recently released its second range
of classic ply ceiling lights on the back of
the success of its first collection.
Consisting of seven new styles, the
2016 range is a progression of its popular
Classic Bell and Flute shapes. Following the
flow of natural curves, there’s the Lotus,
Tendu or Sieza. For a more dramatic look,
minima has introduced the Nook, Flex
and Cusp. Both join the popular Ellipse
and Classic ranges, all of which can be
customised to fit any size or space.
Made using fine grained CNC-cut Birch
plywood, the pieces clip together using
nothing but tension and compression.
They are also available in flat-pack and can
be assembled without the need for glue
or screws.
“Our first collection was well received
by commercial and consumer clients and
today our lights can be seen across the
country hanging in Exclusive Books, Roco-
Mamas, select Nandos, Visa’s head office
and new retail malls in Port Elizabeth and
Noordhoek,” says minima’s founder and
designer, Jacques Cronje. “This support
buoyed us to design a second range that
expressed more movement and could be
made in any size to allow owners to display
as a set in focal areas or to stand alone as
an entrance feature.”
While lighting is its core focus, minima
is venturing into timber furniture. Its first
pieces include a bar stool, coffee table
and chair. Like the lights, they also fit to-
gether making them easy to courier and
assemble.
All styles – lighting and furniture – are
available in natural, white or black or can be
customised to any colour required. Lights
come with a choice of Hoi P’loy coloured
cable as well as ceiling cups in a selection
of finishes and lamp holders. Lamps are
purchased separately.
