celebrated Speech Pathology
Week by hosting the presentation,
“Advances in Speech Pathology:
Conversations and Collaborations”.
Presenters at this event included
Professor Leanne Togher, a Research
Fellow at the Faculty of Health Sciences
and Dr Julia Starling, a speech
pathologist based in Sydney.
Prof Togher spoke on her work in
the field of communication disorders
after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and
the creation of TBI Express, a training
program for people with TBI and those
they communicate with. Prof Togher
also presented recent findings from
a clinical trial, including an overview
of a new TBI assessment tool, which
provides ratings of the conversational
discourse of people with brain injury.
In addressing this year’s SPWeek
theme, Dr Starling spoke on the
need for professionals to communicate
and work together to support young
people with language impairment.
Dr Starling has a private practice in
Sydney where the majority of her
cases are school-aged children and
adolescents with language-based
learning difficulties. At the presentation,
Dr Starling also presented the findings
of her postgraduate study.
