Assistive technology – Speech generating devices
This course aims to increase knowledge and understanding in the areas of assessment
and implementation of speech generating devices for people with complex
communication needs. It provides the participants with the principles of assessments
and intervention strategies and the role of the support team.
Working with people with disability
This course aims to prepare you to work with people with a disability, including those
with complex communication needs - as colleagues and as clients. It provides information
on understanding cerebral palsy, best practise frameworks in supporting individuals
with complex communication needs; and frameworks and practical demonstration
of engagement and collaboration with clients and families.

Day 1
Seminar content
Today’s workshop aims to provide an update on the following areas:

Overview of current theories of the causes of ASD.
•
Analysis of the DSM-5 for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
•
The role of a speech pathologist in the diagnosis of an
Autism Spectrum Disorder and Social (Pragmatic)
Communication Disorder.
•
Diagnosis of ASD in toddlers.
•
Outcome predictors in ASD.
•
Pivotal skills for the acquisition of spoken language in
preschoolers with ASD.
•
Evidence based approaches for improving early
communication in very young children with ASD.
•
Strategies for increasing preverbal and early verbal
communication in children with ASD including a review of
Rapid Motor Imitation Antecedent Training and AAC approaches.
Day 2
Seminar content
Today’s workshop aims to provide an update on the following areas:
•
The development of pragmatic language skills that typically
occur in children during preschool and secondary school
from 3 years to 16 years.
•
Assessment of pragmatic disorders in young children
from preschool to middle primary.
•
Establishing intervention goals with parents and teachers
•
Strategies for the management of children with pragmatic
disorders from preschool to middle primary.
•
The role of peers in social skill intervention.
•
How to maximize the social participation of children with ASD.
•
Including students with ASD within the mainstream classroom
curriculum.
