Nexans cable to

connect UK’s largest

dedicated biomass

power plant

Nexans, France, has completed a contract

worth around €5 million for Scottish

Power, to manufacture and supply

the 33kV cable that provides the grid

connection for E.ON UK’s 44MW biomass

power plant, currently under construction

at Stevens Croft, near Lockerbie, Scotland.

Nexans has manufactured and supplied

XLPE insulated cable with a 500mm

2

cross-section to create two three-phase

medium voltage circuits – a total of 153km

of cable. The cables provide the link with

the nearest available grid connection for

the new power plant, the Scottish Power

substation around 25km away at the

Chapel Cross nuclear power station.

A consortium of Metso and Siemens is

carrying out the turnkey project for the

construction of the €132 million wood-

fired power station.

It will burn 480,000 tons of wood fuel

annually, making it the UK’s largest

dedicated biomass power plant, saving

up to 140,000 tons of greenhouse gas

emissions per year.

The power station is due to start

commissioning in the summer of 2007

and will enter full operation by the end

of 2007. The cable was manufactured in

Nexans’ plant in Bourg-en-Bresse, France,

and the installation has already been

completed.
