Import from a Non-EU Country

A car imported from a Non-EU country is liable to customs duty. It is therefore

recommended to check the customs clearing formalities beforehand.

Once in Austria, a single vehicle approval (“Einzelgenehmigung”) for the typification will

have to be obtained at the local technical inspection authority (in case there is no EU-Permit

for the car).

Car registration

Before registering the car in Austria at one of the car registration offices within one’s

residence district, a car liability insurance has to be contracted and the so-called NoVA

(“Normverbrauchsabgabe”), a tax that needs to be paid when first registering a car, needs to

be calculated and paid to the local tax office. The basis for the assessment of the NoVA is

the purchase price and the fuel consumption. Detailed information on the calculation of the

NoVA can be obtained at the Austrian Ministry of Finance.

The required paperwork for the car registration varies (depending whether it is a new or a

used car, a leased or an imported car, a company car etc.); therefore, the following list can

only serve as a general guideline and focuses on the registration of imported cars:

+

Passport

+

Registration at the place of residence (“Meldezettel”)

+

Proof of liability insurance

+

Data extract from approval database or single vehicle approval from the technical

inspection authority

+

Confirmation on payment of the NoVA

+

For used cars: roadworthiness test (“Pickerl”)

+

For used and new cars: purchase contract or invoice (as proof of ownership)

+

If applicable: confirmation of customs clearance

At the registration, the office issues the “Zulassungsschein” (registration document) and the

“Fahrzeug-Genehmigungsdokument” (vehicle approval document). Once the fees are paid,

the inspection badge and license plates will be issued. The car registration costs

approximately between € 185 and € 205 (incl. license plates).

Upon registering your car (whether new or used) you become liable for vehicle tax (“KfZ-

Steuer”), which is included in the car insurance. The easiest method of payment is to

authorize the insurance company to deduct the amount due directly from your bank account

(“Bankeinzugsverfahren”) or by a standing order (“Dauerauftrag”).

Other Requirements

Highway Vignette (“Autobahnvignette”)

For driving on highways, toll needs to be paid by all vehicles. You have to purchase a

“Vignette” (available at automobile clubs, post offices, kiosks and at some petrol stations).

The “Vignette” is available for periods of ten days (car € 8.30 / motorbike € 4.80), two

months (car € 24.20 / motorbike € 12.10) or a year (car € 80.60 / motorbike € 32.10) and

needs to be affixed onto the windshield of your car. On some highway sections a separate

toll needs to be paid.
