Annual Events and Highlights
There are plenty of events which will take place every year in Vienna. The following is only a
selection of the major events:
Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Market)
The Christmas Market opens each year in mid or late November and is held until Christmas
at Vienna’s Rathausplatz. Market stalls offer many various delicacies, presents and
souvenirs.

Donauinselfest (Danube Island Festival)
This three-day open air festival is held each year in summer on the island in the Danube. It
can be enjoyed for free; there is no entrance fee.
Jazz Fest Wien (Vienna Jazz Festival)
This Jazz festival is held each summer at various venues such as the Vienna State Opera or
the MuseumsQuartier. Internationally acclaimed musical artists perform at this festival.

Osterklang (Vienna Sounds of Easter)
This classical music festival, organized by the Theater an der Wien, is traditionally held
around Easter time and takes place in various venues in the city.
Silvesterpfad
On New Year’s Eve, Vienna’s inner city hosts many shows, bands and music events at
various stages and locations. The restaurants, bars and clubs of the first district offer food
and drink.
Vienna City Marathon
The Marathon is a highlight with thousands of participants on a route that takes runners
along Vienna’s most important sights.

Viennale (Vienna International Film Festival)
National and international films are presented in Vienna’s cinemas during the Viennale each
year in autumn.

Wiener Festwochen
This five-week long cultural festival is held in May and June each year at various locations,
e.g. the Theater an der Wien, and offers a great variety of performances and concerts.

Wiener Opernball (Vienna Opera Ball)
The highlight of Vienna’s ball season, the internationally renowned Vienna Opera Ball takes
place once a year, usually in February.
