The Surrey Leadership Youth Council

Have thoughts, opinions, and ideas about your community?

Encourage other youth in Surrey to speak up by joining

the Surrey Leadership Youth Council!

SLYC is a group of youth who’re aiming to have youth

voices heard and acted upon by the City of Surrey.

SLYC believes other youth know what’s up and can

make a difference.

Visual Arts

Art of the Graphic Novel

and Manga

Discover this growing media with a

professional graphic artist. Whether your

interest is superheroes, Japanese manga,

or humour comics, you’ll learn to design

your own cast of stylised characters,

plot and lay out your scenes across eye-

catching pages, and share your story in

an inventive and engaging way. Surrey

Art Gallery instructors are experienced

art educators and practicing artists.

Focus on Drawing

Do you love to draw and want to further

develop your skills? Drawing is the basic

skill needed for most forms of visual art.

Use charcoal, conté, pastels, and other

media to create observational and still life

drawings. Surrey Art Gallery instructors

are experienced art educators and

practicing artists.

Pottery

Use the potter’s wheel and handbuilding

techniques to create bowls, mugs, and

vases. Also learn to do basic decorating

and glazing. Returning students welcome.

Course fee includes clay, glazes, and

educators.

Social Skills

Through Drama

Do you want to learn about acting? The

study of drama has many crossover

benefits in developing social skills. Taught

by theatre professionals, this inclusive

class will be both fun and challenging as

students develop self-expression through

voice, movement, improvisation, acting

games, and script work. All abilities

welcome.

No script? No problem. Learn

the art of creating on the spot in

Improvisation 101. In an encouraging

and safe atmosphere, you will be

Young actors will have a blast as they

camera. Professional actor and filmmaker

Learners

Designed for home learners, this

daytime art class provides your child the

opportunity to explore a variety of art

techniques such as drawing and painting,

print-making, sculpture and pottery.

Young artists will learn new techniques

and build on existing skills. All supplies

Teen Pottery

Welcome to the world of pottery!

Students will be led through techniques

in both handbuilding and wheelthrowing.

A great class for both beginners

and returning students wishing to

develop already existing pottery skills.

Demonstrations and instruction will be

given in glazing as well as painting your

finished pottery pieces.

Textile Crafts to

Make and Do

Explore the many ways of creating crafts

and art with textiles. Kids will learn some

of the basic skills of knitting and weaving

while also exploring some more unique

ways of creating with textiles such as

felting and fabric dying. We will create

different projects every session so

returning students can build their skills!
