Following the fan backlash

against

Star Trek: Into Darkness

and its recycling of the events

of

The Wrath of Khan

, the third

new Trek film hits the reset

button with a very traditional

adventure and a new director at

the helm. Fast and the Furious

franchise regular Justin Lin

brings things back up to warp

speed, destroying the Enterprise

(again) and leaving the crew stranded on a hostile alien

world. Separated by the crash, the disparate group

must reunite to defeat reptilian villain Krall (Idris Elba),

who has a major grudge against the Federation and is

seeking an ancient artifact in Kirk’s possession.

Star

Trek Beyond

also introduces a striking new alien in the

form of Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), who becomes a valuable

ally in the fight against Krall. Channelling the spirit of

the Original Series in both tone and production design,

co-writer Simon Pegg and self-confessed Trekker Lin

have delivered a fan-friendly film that will also appeal

to a mainstream audience. This is Star Trek

for Gen Y,

featuring a theme song by Rihanna (!) along with some

Beastie Boys to pump up the action.

STAR TREK BEYOND

Swimming, swimming,

swimming... It’s something that

blue tang Dory is ace at. This is

no great surprise, of course, for

she is a fish. One thing she’s

not great at, unfortunately, is

remembering stuff, and this is at

the heart of this sequel to 2003’s

much loved

Finding Nemo

. It’s a

year since we last caught up (fish

years must be different to human

ones), and Dory has become a

part of Marlin and Nemo’s family. While accompanying

Nemo in class one day, Dory has a flashback, briefly

remembering that she has a family herself. So,

she has to go and look for them right? Of course!

Unfortunately, however, her forgetfulness proves to

be a barrier. Luckily she has friends likes Marlin and

Nemo, who vow to accompany her on her quest. A

quick ride from Crush (dude!) and they’re on their way

to where Dory thinks she came from. But naturally

events conspire to make the journey more difficult

than any of them had ever imagined. Pixar don’t always

nail sequels, but they’ve really hit the hammerhead on

the nail here. Or, uh, something like that.

AF

An unforgettable journey she probably won’t remember.
