Zöe Beck
turned to the window and
gazed straight at me.
At that very moment, the
light in Sam’s apartment
went out.
I stood in the dim
lamplight
that
could
hardly penetrate the fog
and looked around. I saw
the outlines of the village’s
low buildings slowly grow
hazy before dissolving
into the fog. As the path
under my feet vanished, a
damp chill crept under my
skin. The lamplight was a
bodiless flicker without a
source.
From a distance, I could
hear Flann’s laughter.
