gazed straight at me.

At that very moment, the

light in Sam’s apartment

went out.

I stood in the dim

lamplight

that

could

hardly penetrate the fog

and looked around. I saw

the outlines of the village’s

low buildings slowly grow

hazy before dissolving

into the fog. As the path

under my feet vanished, a

damp chill crept under my

skin. The lamplight was a

bodiless flicker without a

source.

From a distance, I could

hear Flann’s laughter.
