he 1989-90 Men's basketball team
had perhaps one of its best seasons
ever. Predicted by sports polls in
San Diego to place seventh in the division,
this years Toreros finished third with an
overall record of 16-12 and a conference
record of 9-5. Along with an outstanding
record, the Toreros had an opportunity to
receive
a NCAA
playoff berth if they won
the
wee
tournament, but due to the trage–
dy that struck Loyola Marymount, the bid
was given to the Lions. They faced such
opponents as UC Santa Barbara, SOSU,
Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, and a
preseason game against a collegiate team
from Australia.
. ... This years team returned eight players
from last season, including three starters.
The three returning starters are senior for–
ward
Craig
Cotrell, junior center Dondi
Bell and sophomore guard
Gylan Dottin.
Other returning players are
Wayman
Strickland, Keith Colvin, Kevlin
Woods,
and
Randy Thompson.
This
year, the three transfers from last year,
John Jerome, Anthony Thomas,
and
Shawn Hamilton
were able to play on
the court this year since last year they were
required to sit out because of a new NCAA
rule about transfers. In
John Jerome's
first playable season at USO, he broke a
season record by scoring a total of 540
points and averaged 19.3 points per game.
Along with these records,
Wayman
Strickland
also had an opportunity to
break a USO record, but since the tourna–
ment was cancelled, he finished with a to–
tal of 169 assists. The record is believed to
be 171 assists in a season.
Next years team will be as strong as this
years. Only two players will be lost due to
graduation. So there are high expectations
for both the players and the school in see–
ing their basketball team victorious next
year.
