Happy 40th!

radition .

We celebrated a birth–

day this year - our forti–

eth!

So,

it was a time to

honor the traditions al–

ready established, as well

as a time to look forward

to what this last decade of

the century will brings

(besides our fiftieth birth–

day!).

Tradition was most evi–

dent at Homecoming '89.

Larger crowds than ever

participated in the week's

events, including an alum–

ni dinner/dance where ev–

ery year's class was repre–

sented by at least one

gra–

duate.

It

was nice

to

see so

many alums returning for

the events - reminding us

that life moves on and

changes, but is firmly

grounded in the past.

And it's the past that we

have spent four-plus years

studying and learning. A

past that speaks to us out

of the mouths of dead

po–

ets and warriors and kings.

A past we must all accept

'

and understand, so that we can move

on and not repeat it. USD has tried to

help us in this endeavor, helping us

to develop a world view with which

to frame the rest of our lives.

But we have also learned to have

fun - that sometimes you just gotta'

take a break, or you'll be forced to

run screaming out of wherever

you're holed up to study, or write a

paper. Saturday afternoons on the

intramural fields, jogging around the

West P9int Field track with the

ocean breeze blowing softly against

your face, Sunday night mass with

friends, Wednesday nights at . ..

Who can forget these halcyon days?

No one, hopefully. Instead, remember

them all clearly, and remember how

healthy and happy you were running

through the canyons, and try to keep

a little fun in your life.

Ultimately, however, the gift we

really take forward from USD is the

will

to

keep growing, learning and

changing. Challenges of all kinds will

confront us throughout life - spiri–

tual, physical, emotional. We have

developed, here at USD, the strength

and experience

to

overcome obsta–

cles, and

to

reach for higher and

higher goals.

And so, now, the road lies before

us. We each step out apparently

alone. But, echoing softly behind us,

are the memories and friendships

from our years at USD. They will

help to light and guide our way into

the future.

The torero fans of students, alumni,

and faculty cheer as the team strives

for another winning game.
