SMS Meer has invested €22 million in a
new production site in Shanghai. The site
was officially opened on 28 October at a
ceremony attended by 250 guests. SMS
Meer is a business area of the SMS group,
and the global market leader in plant and
machine building for tubes, long products,
forging, copper and aluminium production,
and heating technologies.
The Shanghai site will manufacture
complete machines for the Chinese market
and components for customers around the
world. SMS Meer’s engineering and design
operations will continue to be based in
Europe.
With its combination of European design
and manufacturing capacity in China, SMS
is pursuing a distinctive strategy within the
industry. Joachim Schönbeck, president
and CEO of SMS Meer, commented,
“The outstanding quality of our plants and
machines is what differentiates us in the
market, and we are determined to maintain
and increase this competitive advantage.
The new Shanghai site will enhance the
flexibility of our manufacturing operations.”

employs 250 people. The new site also
gives Chinese customers direct access to
the complete SMS Meer range of services,
from installation and commissioning to
maintenance and modernisation. Mr
Schönbeck added, “Our highly qualified
employees guarantee optimal customer
communication in Chinese language, while
also working closely together with their
colleagues in Germany, so our customers
receive the full benefit of all SMS Meer’s
expertise, combined with quick on-site
support.” SMS Meer has been active in

China since the 1960s, and its plants and
machines have been used for various large
infrastructure projects, to make products
including tubes, structural steel, railroad
tracks, railway wheels and power plant
components. The SMS group has had a
presence in China since 1904.

New pipeline
division
WACHS Water Services has announced
that it has formed a new division that will
offer assessment services for pipeline sys-
tems. Building on its success in providing
valve assessment to municipalities and
utilities throughout North America, the
company is in negotiations with companies
to provide new trenchless solutions.
“Traditionally Wachs Water Services
has provided assessment and maintenance
programmes for in-line valves. Knowing
the location and operability of each
valve, hydrant and meter in a system,
municipalities and utilities can manage
their critical moving parts effectively and
comprehensively,” commented Cliff Wilson,
president of Wachs Water Services.
