IR is the most recent
development from Institut Dr Foerster, which
extends the company’s core competency for
non-destructive testing of metallic semi-
finished products by applying the technology
of inductive heat flux thermography.
The infrared technology represents an
innovative approach to non-destructive
testing applications that, until now, have not
been successfully solved using traditional
NDT technologies.
As a first step, Foerster presents a new
solution for surface testing of hot-rolled steel
tubes and billets with round and square
cross sections. More advanced applications
are under development and will be available
in the future.
Traditional technologies for testing steel
tubes and billets with inductive thermography
only collect and evaluate the temperature of
the surface area once.
Foerster developed a new evaluation
method (patent applied for) that is based
on the dynamic temperature profile on the
surface over the complete visual field of
the camera. This additional time dimension
ensures a reliable and repeatable separation
NDT by inductive heat flux thermography
between real defects and noise signals.
Before testing, the test piece is wetted
fine for homogenisation and increasing of
the emission coefficient. The induction coil
heats up the test piece in which defects open
to the surface produce a local temperature
increase that is proportional to the defect
depth. Four infrared cameras scan the
surface of the test piece completely and
without any physical contact.
