Haulroads can make money
Illegal mining – spiralling out
of control
This paper by AT Visser presents a critical
review of the status of haulroad design
and management together with the
impact that these principles have made on
operations – particularly in terms of cost
effectiveness.
Illegal mining is on the rise in SA and
presents challenges that need to be
addressed from a range of perspectives.
These include a loss of revenue, taxes,
employment opportunities, capital expen-
diture and procurement generally led by
legal mining entities.

AROUND THE INDUSTRY
Quarries need to produce
aggregates at the lowest cost-
per-ton without affecting the
overall quality of the product. To
do this, operators need to take a
long-term strategic view when
purchasing crushing equipment.
Quarry operators should ensure
that the crushing machine
selected is fit-for-purpose and
meets the exact requirements
of their operation; this is where
Weir Minerals
comes in.

Deregistration and the MPRDA
Pre-owned Bells find new home
at Transkei Quarries
If a mining company fails to submit its
annual returns for two consecutive submis-
sion periods, fails to remedy the omission
and cannot provide good reasons for the
failure, it will be subject to deregistration
by the Companies and Intellectual Property
Commission (CIPC).
In this Quarry Face feature, we look at a
leading Eastern Cape quarrying company,
which has been expanding its capacity and
as such, is depending on a trusted OEM to
help meet its increased production targets.
