(Holmens Canal near Holmens Bridge).
(See page 24).
T h e c h u r c h was erected by Christian IV in
1619 by the conversion or rebuilding of an old
anchor smithy, and in 1641 it was extended by the
addition of the two transepts, to its present dimen
sions. In the choir garden between the transepts,
out towards Holmens Canal is a bronze statue of
the naval hero
Tordenskjold
(by V. Bissen). The
garden is fenced off from the street by a richly
ornamented wrought iron railing.
The i n t e r i o r of the church is very interest-
ing. During the numerous oonflagrations which
have ravaged Copenhagen from time to time the
church has been spared and this accounts for the
preservation of the magnificent old furniture etc.
The
altar

Schroeder
of Koge; splendid gold and silver ern-
broidered

T h e c h u r c li was built to the plans of Lam
bert van der Haven in 1682—93, but was only
completed 100 years later. The remarkable
spire
was added in 1742—50 (architect L.
de Thura).
There is an outer spiral stairway winding round
the spire right up to the ball supporting the large
figure of the
Saviour w ith the banner of victory.
The ascent is easy ancl w ithou t danger,
the stair-
case being protected with an iron balustrade. At
the foot of the tower there are four large seated
figures representing the evangelists. The tower
contains an enormous
clockwork
dating from 1699.

decorated. The
