DETERIORATION INQUALITY
On account of unregulated growth of colleges and universities, which was due to continuous pressure for equity and social justice
and the craze for government jobs, especially white collared ones, it was not possible for the government to monitor, evaluate and
maintain or develop quality in higher education. Though a few truly qualitative institutes of excellence like the IITs in Eng ineering or
IIMs in Management, IISc, (in Science), Institutes of Social Science Research like Tata Institute of Fundamental Social Science, Re-
search, the number of such institutes is a drop in the ocean. By and large, colleges and even a number of universities have become
notorious for low standards and malpractices in examinations.
